On May 28, 1976, the last day of high school in a small Texas town, incoming seniors begin their annual hazing of rising freshmen. Randall “Pink” Floyd (Jason London) struggles with pressure to sign a football loyalty pledge that would define his future, while awkward freshman Mitch Kramer tries to survive his initiation and find where he fits in.
As the night unfolds through parties, cruising, and teenage rebellion, they drift into the orbit of David Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey), a laid-back older local who still hangs around high school scenes, embodying the film’s aimless, freewheeling spirit. The night continues across a series of unpredictable encounters as the teenagers look ahead to a summer defined by freedom and possibility.
